How does a European adventure holiday sound? Pretty great, right? Europe is a continent of varied terrains, climates and biodiversity – a hiker’s paradise. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a weekend wanderer, Europe is known for incredible trails that promise breathtaking views, fresh mountain air and unforgettable memories. If you’re looking for the best hiking destinations in Europe for your next adventure holiday, we’ve got your back(pack).
The Dolomites, Italy
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Dolomites are known for their jagged limestone towers and pink-tinged sunsets – a phenomenon locals call enrosadira. The rock here is super unique as it was once part of a prehistoric coral reef. The region’s famous Alta Via 1 trail runs over 120km, linking cosy mountain huts (rifugi) where you can enjoy hearty Italian food between hikes.
The Laugavegur Trail, Iceland
If hiking on another planet sounds appealing, Iceland’s Laugavegur Trail might be the next best thing. You’ll pass steaming geothermal vents, rainbow-coloured rhyolite mountains and fields of ancient lava. The 55km route connects two geothermal oases, Landmannalaugar (The People’s Pools) and Þórsmörk (The Valley of Thor), and you can even soak in natural hot springs along the way.
The Picos de Europa, Spain
The Picos de Europa may be smaller than the Pyrenees, but they pack a punch. Limestone cliffs, deep gorges and high pastures dotted with wildflowers make this northern Spanish range a hiker’s dream. The Cares Gorge trail – carved into the mountainside – was originally built to maintain a hydroelectric canal, which still runs alongside the path today.
Trolltunga, Norway
One of Norway’s most iconic viewpoints, Trolltunga – Troll’s Tongue – juts out 700 metres above Lake Ringedalsvatnet. It’s a tough 27km round trip, but the reward is a jaw-dropping panorama of fjords and mountains. The name comes from Norwegian folklore, which tells of trolls turning to stone if caught in sunlight - hence the ‘frozen’ tongue of rock.

The Julian Alps, Slovenia
Slovenia’s Julian Alps combine rugged peaks with peaceful glacial lakes. At the heart of the range is Triglav National Park, named after Mount Triglav, the country’s highest mountain and a symbol of national pride (it even appears on the Slovenian flag). Local tradition says every Slovenian should climb it at least once in their life.
The Westweg Trail, Germany
Winding for 285km through Germany’s Black Forest, the Westweg Trail is a mix of dense pine woodland, rolling hills and fairytale villages that inspired the twisted stories of the Brothers Grimm. The area’s famous cuckoo clocks were once made by farmers during snowy winters and you can still spot workshops along the route.
The High Tatras, Slovakia
These mountains may be small compared to the Alps, but the High Tatras are full of drama - jagged peaks, turquoise lakes and wild chamois grazing in alpine meadows – it’s rather idyllic. The range is also home to some of Europe’s last wild brown bears. The climb to Rysy, Slovakia’s highest peak, rewards you with views stretching into neighbouring Poland.
The Lake District, UK
No top European hiking list would be complete without a UK entry. Closer to home, the Lake District offers some of the most scenic walks in Britain. From challenging climbs like Scafell Pike to peaceful lakeside rambles, the Lake District has inspired generations of poets, including William Wordsworth. Over 16 lakes and countless tarns (small mountain pools) make it a water-lover’s paradise as well as a walker’s heaven.
Europe is a continent rich in culture and history, set amongst breathtaking landscapes that have been shaped over thousands of years. So, if you need a hiking escape that’s got it all, these destinations offer more than just a walk in the great outdoors. No matter what kind of adventure you’re seeking, Europe’s hiking hotspots deliver in spades.
