Why is aftercare so important now that the industry is stepping away from these chemicals?

Fluorocarbons have had their place within the outdoor industry for decades, just as they are used in a lot of other industries such as flooring. The outdoor industry has made a step together to positively reduce the impact on our environment. This means that huge brands such as GORE-TEX, Rab and Mountain Equipment for example are making steps to futureproof our time outdoors by removing these chemicals from the environment.

Although the clothing and footwear that you purchased will still bead beautifully and be of fantastic quality it means that you might need to alter your approach to care. This is because the durability of the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) won’t be quite as strong as it used to be, particularly because it will no longer repel oils – don’t worry though Grangers has the solution and it’s so easy.

Cleaning is your first step – the myth has always been that overcleaning your lovely outdoor jacket can impact its performance, but the opposite is actually true and that’s even more-so the case now with the move away from fluorocarbons. Using a technical cleaner is key to maintaining performance, as, if you leave dirt and dust on the surface your DWR won’t perform as it should. Also, if you use a normal detergent (even a gentle one) it will strip away your DWR meaning it’s no longer going to bead away the rain. Don’t worry though it’s super easy to clean with Performance Wash, all you need is half a cap in your washing machine in place of normal detergent.

Then it comes to reproofing. If, after cleaning, your jacket still isn’t beading as it was when new then it’s time to reproof. Whilst damp, either wash again using Clothing Repel or spray-on using Performance Repel Plus. Or, if you want to make your life super easy, stick to our 2-IN-1 formulation Wash + Repel Clothing 2 in 1 and your gear will be cleaned and proofed in one wash saving you time, energy and water.

All of Grangers’ formulations are PFC-free and PFAS-free and we do not use any fluorocarbons within our company. In 1947, we were the first aftercare brand to invent water-based protection products and today, our entire range is water-based. Our formulations are also certified biodegradable so readily biodegrade, the opposite of fluorocarbons.
