Environmental Responsibility

Granger’s developed the first environmentally friendly, water-based proofing treatments over 40 years ago and since then we have continued to work hard to reduce our impact on the environment.

Granger’s believe that independent accreditation is the only way to truly demonstrate companies green credentials. Granger’s is the first, and so far the only, company to be both ISO 14001 accredited and a bluesign® system partner.

All our wash-in cleaners and proofers are designed to be used at temperatures down to 30°C – reducing electricity use by up to 40%. And, because our products last longer, there is less need to proof garments as often.

Independent tests have shown our wash-in waterproofing products to be more durable and longer lasting – and they are more concentrated than our competitors’ products; there is only need to use half as much.

These qualities help our environment by:
  • giving twice the number of washes compared to our competitors;
  • saving water and electricity; there isn't a need to wash as often;
  • saving water, packaging and electricity; we don’t need to produce as much,
  • saving fuel; there is less of a need to transport as many bottles, and
  • saving landfill as less than half are thrown away.
Incredibly, in the UK, 13 million plastic bottles find their way into landfill every day – that’s why all our plastic bottles are recyclable. We use HDPE as these are the most suitable for our products. Most HDPE bottles don’t contain any recycled content – even the white plastic milk bottles bought from supermarkets only contain up to 10% recycled HDPE. We’ve been working closely with our manufacturers to bring you our 30% recycled HDPE bottle, which we think is a first for the industry.

We manufacture the outer boxes for our products using 100% recycled card and any waste card we have is recycled. Our suppliers deliver cartons, bottles, lids, caps, tubes and spray heads in cardboard boxes; all of which are recycled.

We now save 80% of our waste from landfill– that’s over four skips each week.

But our efforts don’t stop with our products – we’ve been working hard in our offices as well.

Rooms, we don’t use, often have movement detecting light switches that only turn on when someone enters the room… and turn off once they leave.

We have looked at our water consumption and have instigated a number of water saving measures that will save over 30,000 litres of water each year.

In 2008 we partnered with The Woodland Trust, funding 500 schools to plant 25,000 trees.

This year we joined forces with Oxfam to recycle outdoor clothing; washing, reproofing and restoring it before returning it to them to sell through a select number of stores. Not only does this give unwanted outdoor gear a second life, saving it form ending up as landfill, but it also enables Oxfam to raise money for their projects worldwide

We recognise there is still a long way to go but we are committed to our environmental responsibilities and are working hard to do better.
